What are the enhanced security settings for Apple Mail?

NOTE: These instructions are for Apple Mail version 2 and earlier. If you are using a newer version of Mail, please see the instructions for newer versions.

Enhanced Security users may use Kerberos authentication in addition to TLS to encrypt POP, IMAP, and SMTP authentication. Versions 1.2 and 1.3 both support TLS. You will need to go into "preferences" menu to reconfigure your settings if you used the wizard to set up your account.

Setting up the SMTP Server

Outgoing Mail Server:
Your SMTP mail server

Server port:
Should be 587

Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
This can either be on or off; data will be encrypted regardless.

Authentication:
Choose [Kerberos Version 5 (GSSAPI)].

User Name:
Your email account login (usually your pennkey)

Password:
You do not need to enter a password for Kerberos authentication.

Account Type:
-Choose [POP] if you wish to download email to your desktop.
-Choose [IMAP] if you use multiple computers and wish to leave email on the server. (you will need to clean out your email periodically to make sure you do not go over quota)

Description:
Nickname for your account

Email Address:
Your Penn email address

Full Name:
Your Real Name

Incoming Mail Server:
Your pop/imap server address User Name:
Your email account login (usually your pennkey)

Password:
You do not need to enter a password for Kerberos Authentication

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
This should be the server you configured above in the [Setting up the SMTP Server] section.

Advanced ()

Enable this Account:
You can use this email account only if this is turned on

Include when automatically checking for new mail:
Be sure this is checked if you want to check mail periodically when the Mail application is running.

Account Directory:
This is where your downloaded mail will be stored. Leave this blank if you want Apple Mail to manage them automatically.

Port:
Apple Mail will set this option automatically.

Use SSL:
This can be either on or off. Data will be encrypted regardlessly.

Authentication:
[Kerberos Version 5 (GSSAPI)] should be selected.
