What are the enhanced security settings for for Thunderbird?

[ Basic Security | Enhanced Security ] for using

NOTE: These instructions are for Thunderbird versions 2.x.x.x and earlier. If you are using a newer version of Thunderbird, please see the instructions for newer versions.

Enhanced Security users may use Kerberos authentication in addition to TLS to encrypt POP,IMAP, and SMTP authentication. These settings are the same for both Macintosh and PC clones. The configurations are set under the Account Settings menu item in the Tools menu.

Preparation

Thunderbird 1.5.x supports Kerberos but needs some configuration to turn the feature on.

  1. Go to Tools menu and then select the options menu item
  2. Go to the Advanced section and make sure you are in the General tab.
  3. Click on the Config Editor... button
  4. Type "network.auth.use-sspi" in the Filter textbox and press [Enter].

    Case A:

If you see an entry like below with the value of "false", you can exit out the options and proceed to the Account Settings section.

    Case B:

If you see an entry like below with the value of "true", double click the entry to set its value to "false".

Please exit and restart Thunderbird to save the configuration change.

    Case C:

If you do not see any entries for network.auth.use-sspi, right click on the white space under "Preference Name" and choose "New", and then "Boolean".

Then, enter "network.auth.use-sspi" and press [OK].

Finally, choose "false" as the value and press [OK].

The about:config list should now look like Case A above.
Please exit and restart Thunderbird to save the configuration change.
